How to Shut Down Your PC Without Waiting for an Update

Sep 16, 2026

Windows updates are important for keeping your system secure and reliable. However, there may be times when you simply want to turn off your PC without installing a pending update first.

If the Windows 11 power menu shows Update and shut down instead of the normal Shut down option, you can use these three alternative methods to shut down your computer immediately without going through the update process.

Why Does Windows Show "Update and Shut Down"?

When Windows has downloaded an update that requires a restart to finish installing, it may add Update and shut down and Update and restart to the power menu.

This is normal Windows behavior. The update is waiting for the next shutdown or restart to complete its installation.

Shut down PC Directly without Updating Windows

Method 1. Use the Shortcut

The Alt + F4 shortcut provides one of the easiest methods to access the traditional Windows shutdown dialog.

  • Save your work and close any applications you are using.
  • Press Alt + F4.
  • In the Shut Down Windows dialog, open the drop-down menu.
  • Select Shut down.
  • Click OK.

Method 2. Run the Command

You can also shut down Windows directly with a command.

  • Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog.
  • Type the following command and press Enter:

shutdown /s /f /t 0

Warning: The /f parameter forces applications to close, so always save your files before using this command.

Method 3. Create a Desktop Shortcut

If you frequently need to shut down without going through the Windows Update power option, you can create a shortcut can then double-click it whenever you want to shut down your computer.

  • Right-click an empty area of the desktop.
  • Select New > Shortcut.
  • Enter:

shutdown /s /t 0

  • Click Next.
  • Give the shortcut a name such as Shut Down PC.
  • Click Finish.

Can I Remove "Update and Shut Down" Permanently?

Using these methods only changes how you initiate the shutdown. It does not remove or uninstall the pending Windows update.

Windows may continue displaying Update and shut down when an update is ready to be installed. There is no recommended Windows setting that permanently removes this option while keeping Windows Update working normally.

If you frequently need to postpone updates, using Windows Update's built-in temporary Pause updates feature is safer than attempting to disable Windows Update completely.

Conclusion

If you need to shut down your Windows 11 PC without waiting for an update, you don't necessarily have to choose Update and shut down. These methods introduced in this tutorial let you shut down your PC directly while leaving Windows Update intact.

However, it's generally a good idea to install Windows updates when convenient to keep your system secure and up to date.
