How to Fix App Login Problems Caused by Controlled Folder Access

Oct 27, 2026

Have you ever tried to log in to an app on Windows 11, only to find that it keeps failing or cannot save your login information? While incorrect credentials or network problems and corrupted app data are common causes, Windows security settings can sometimes interfere with an app's normal operation.

One possible cause is Controlled Folder Access, a feature in Microsoft Defender Antivirus that helps protect important files from unauthorized changes. If an app needs to write files locally during sign-in to store settings, session information or configuration data in a protected folder but Windows blocks it, the app may fail to behave normally. In this guide, we will explain how to troubleshoot app login problems by modifying the settings of Controlled Folder Access.

Check If Controlled Folder Access is Blocking Your App

Before changing any security settings, check whether Windows has actually blocked the application.

  • Press Windows + S, type Windows Security, and open it.
  • Select Virus & threat protection.
  • Click Protection history.
  • Review recent events for Controlled Folder Access notifications by clicking on each of them.

Important: If the affected app appears in the protection history, consider adding it to the allowed apps list.

Allow the App Through Controlled Folder Access

Instead of disabling the entire security feature, it is generally safer to allow the specific application you trust. Ensure not to grant permission to the application you don’t recognize.

Step 1. Open Ransomware Protection Settings

Open Windows Security, click Virus & threat protection and then Manage ransomware protection.

Step 2. Open the App List

Under Controlled folder access, select Allow an app through Controlled folder access.

Step 3. Add the Affected App

Select Add an allowed app, then choose Recently blocked apps if the application appears in the list.

If it isn't listed, choose Browse all apps and locate the application's executable file.

Important: Only allow applications you recognize and trust. Then reopen the app and try signing in again.

Disable Controlled Folder Access

Disabling Controlled Folder Access reduces protection against unauthorized changes to files in protected folders. If you need to turn off the feature, follow these steps:

  • Open Windows Security.
  • Select Virus & threat protection.
  • Click Manage ransomware protection.
  • Switch Controlled folder access off.
  • Reopen the affected app and try signing in again.

Important: However, it is generally safer to keep it enabled and allow individual trusted applications when necessary rather than turning it off entirely.

Conclusion

If you can't log in to an app on Windows 11, Controlled Folder Access is one possible cause. If the issue persists after trying these methods in this article, investigate other possible causes, such as network connectivity, credentials, and application errors.
