How To Disable Keyboard Or Mouse From Waking Up Computer In Windows 11

Oct 30, 2026

When a Windows 11 computer enters Sleep mode, a slight mouse movement or accidental keyboard press can wake it up. This may be inconvenient when the computer is not in use, especially if the mouse is easily moved or a key is accidentally pressed.

Fortunately, Windows 11 allows users to control which devices can wake the computer. This article introduces several ways to disable keyboard or mouse wake-up permissions in Windows 11.

Method 1. Disable Keyboard or Mouse Wake-Up Using Device Manager

Device Manager provides a straightforward way to manage whether a connected device can wake the computer.

Step 1. Open Device Manager

Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager, or press Win + X and choose it from the list.

Step 2. Locate your mouse

Expand Mice and other pointing devices. Right-click the mouse and select Properties.
Locate your mouse

Step 3. Revoke wake permission

Navigate to the Power Management tab and uncheck the box labeled Allow this device to wake the computer. Click OK to save.
Revoke wake permission

Step 4. Repeat for your keyboard

Expand the Keyboards section, right-click your keyboard, go to Properties > Power Management, and uncheck the same box.

Method 2. Disable Keyboard or Mouse Wake-Up Using Command Prompt

Windows includes the Powercfg command-line utility, which can manage the devices allowed to wake the computer.

Step 1. Open Command Prompt

Press Win + S, type cmd, and select Run as administrator to open Command Prompt.

Step 2. Display devices currently allowed

Type the following command and press Enter to display devices currently allowed to wake the computer:

powercfg -devicequery wake_armed

Step 3. Revoke wake permission

Type the following command and press Enter:

powercfg -devicedisablewake "Device Name"

Replace "Device Name" with the exact name as it appears in the list, such as "HID Keyboard Device" or "HID-compliant mouse".
Revoke wake permission

After running the disable command, you can re-run powercfg /devicequery wake_armed to confirm the device has been removed from the list.

Conclusion

Windows 11 provides several ways to control whether a keyboard or mouse can wake the computer from Sleep mode. Device Manager is the simplest option for most users, while Command Prompt and PowerShell offer convenient alternatives. By disabling wake-up permission for the selected devices, accidental mouse movements or keyboard presses will no longer wake the computer. If necessary, the setting can be restored later by enabling Allow this device to wake the computer or using the corresponding Powercfg command.
