Silence Your PC: Two Ways to Turn Off Windows 11 Startup Sound

Jun 29, 2026

That Windows 11 startup chime? Charming at home, but a nightmare in a silent office or at 2 AM. If you are tired of muting your laptop *before* shutting it down, just kill the sound permanently.

Here is how to silence it in less than a minute.

Option 1: The Quick Fix via Windows Settings

The fastest way to toggle this off is right inside your personalization menu.

1. Open Settings: Hit Win + I on your keyboard.

2. Navigate to Themes: Click Personalization in the left sidebar, then select Themes.

3. Open Sound Options: Look under the Related settings section and click Sounds.

4. Kill the Chime: In the popup window, uncheck the box that says Play Windows Startup sound. Hit Apply, click OK, and enjoy the silence.

Option 2: The Volume Mixer Route

If you are already tweaking your audio, you can dive straight in from your taskbar.

1. Jump to Sound Settings: Right-click the speaker icon in the bottom-right corner of your screen and hit Sound settings.

2. Access Advanced Controls: Scroll down the page and click More sound settings.

3. Disable It: This launches the classic audio control panel. Switch to the Sounds tab, uncheck Play Windows Startup sound, and save your changes.

The Verdict

That is it. Your PC will now boot up completely muted. Miss the chime? Just trace your steps back and check the box again to bring it back.
