How to Enable the AI-Free Experience in the Start Menu

May 12, 2026

Microsoft has introduced more AI-powered features into the Windows Start menu, including recommendations, Copilot integrations, and personalized suggestions. By default, the Copilot key opens Microsoft Copilot. While some users appreciate these additions, others prefer a cleaner, more traditional Start menu experience.

Fortunately, Windows provides a way to enable an AI-free Experience in the Start menu by customizing the Copilot key. If you do not use Copilot often, you can reduce AI-driven content in Start by following the steps introduced in this guide.

Steps to Reduce AI-Generated Content in Start

Step 1. Open Windows Settings

Press the Windows + I key on the keyboard to open the Settings app.

Step 2. Select Bluetooth & Devices

In the left sidebar, click the Bluetooth & devices tab.

Step 3. Open Keyboard Settings

Scroll down on the right pane until you find the Keyboard section. Click on it.

Step 4. Switch to Search

Open the drop-down menu of Customize Copilot key on keyboard, and select Search from it.

Final Thoughts

If you prefer a cleaner Start menu without AI-powered suggestions, customizing the Copilot key is an easy solution. With a few clicks, you can make the Windows Start menu simpler and classic.
