How to Enable or Disable Automatic Password Change Feature in Google Chrome

Oct 24, 2025

Google Chrome has steadily improved its password management features to make browsing more secure and convenient. One of its newer tools, the Automatic Password Change feature, helps you update compromised passwords with just a few clicks — no need to visit the site manually.

What Is Chrome’s Automatic Password Change Feature

When Chrome detects that one of your saved passwords has been involved in a data breach, it will suggest changing it. With the Automatic Password Change option turned on, Chrome can automatically visit the affected website, generate a strong new password, and save it in your Google Password Manager.

Enable or Disable Automatic Password Change Using Chrome Flags

Chrome Flags are experimental settings that allow you to turn on or off new features before they’re officially rolled out. You can use this to enable or disable the Automatic Password Change function.

1. Open the Google Chrome.

2. In the address bar, type chrome://flags and press Enter.

3. Type Improved password change service in the Search flags box.

4. Click the dropdown next to it and choose one of the following options:

  • Enabled – Turns on the Automatic Password Change feature.
  • Disabled – Turns off the feature.
  • Default – Keeps Chrome’s default behavior.

5. Click Relaunch to restart Chrome and apply the change.

Enable or Disable Automatic Password Change Using the Windows Registry

If you prefer to configure the feature at the system level (for example, across multiple user accounts or corporate environments), you can use the Windows Registry to manage this Chrome policy.

1. Press Win + R, type regedit, and press Enter to open the Registry Editor.

2. Navigate to the following path:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Chrome

If the Google or Chrome folder doesn’t exist, right-click and create them manually.

3. In the right pane, right-click and select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value, and name it AutomatedPasswordChangeSettings.
create AutomatedPasswordChangeSettings

4. Double-click the new value and set its Value data:

  • 1 = Enable Automatic Password Change
  • 2 = Disable Automatic Password Change
set its Value data

Conclusion

The Automatic Password Change feature in Chrome is a powerful tool to keep your online accounts safe and save time when dealing with compromised passwords. Whether you want Chrome to handle password updates automatically or prefer to manage them manually, adjusting this setting is quick and simple.
