How to Enable or Disable Notification Badges in Windows 11 Taskbar

Jun 10, 2026

Notification badges on the Windows 11 taskbar are the small numeric counters or alert dots that appear on app icons, letting you know at a glance when there are unread messages, missed updates, or ongoing activities. While many users find them helpful for keeping track of everything from email to calendar reminders, they can also be a source of constant distraction. Windows 11 allows you to manage these badges both through settings and the Registry.

Method 1: Using Settings App

The most straightforward method to manage taskbar badges is through the Windows Settings app. This method is best for individual users who want a quick toggle.

1. Press Win + I on your keyboard to launch the Settings app.

2. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Personalization. On the right side, click on the Taskbar page.

3. Scroll down and click on Taskbar behaviors to expand the section.

4. Look for the option labeled Show badges on taskbar apps. Check this box to enable badges or uncheck it to disable them.

Method 2: Using Windows Registry (Advanced)

You can also manage notification badges through the Windows Registry. Editing the Registry incorrectly can cause system issues. Always back up your Registry first.

1. Press Win + R, type regedit, and press Enter.

2. In the Registry Editor, go to the following path:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

3. In the right pane, locate the TaskbarBadges DWORD. If it doesn't exist, right-click on an empty area, select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value, and name it TaskbarBadges.

4. Double-click on the TaskbarBadges DWORD to edit it.

  • Set the Value data to 1 to enable badges.
  • Set the Value data to 0 to disable badges.

5. Close the Registry Editor and restart your PC to apply the changes.

Conclusion

Notification badges on the Windows 11 taskbar serve as a valuable information gateway, but they should serve your workflow, not dictate it. Whether you choose to enable them for quick updates or disable them to create a distraction-free environment, Windows 11 offers a simple, flexible path to configure them exactly how you want.
