How to Access Advanced Startup (WinRE) on Windows 11

Mar 24, 2026

When Windows can’t start normally—or even when it can, but you need to perform deep-level surgery—you need to access the digital equivalent of an emergency room. In Windows 11, that facility is called Windows Recovery Environment, or WinRE.

Commonly referred to as the Advanced Startup menu, WinRE is a separate, lightweight operating system built into Windows that allows you to troubleshoot, repair, and restore your main installation. In this guide, we’ll walk through several easy methods to access Advanced Startup on Windows 11.

Method 1: Use Shift + Restart (Start Menu)

This is the fastest and most common method to use when your PC is still running.

1. Open the Start Menu and click on the Power icon.

2. Hold down the Shift key on your keyboard.

3. While holding Shift, click on Restart. Your system will restart and enter Windows RE.

If you prefer using menus, you can navigate directly to the option in the Settings app.

1. Open the Settings app (you can press Windows Key + I).

2. Click on System in the left-hand sidebar.

  • /r : Restart the computer.
  • /o : Go to the Advanced Boot Options menu.
