How to Use Windows Reliability Monitor to Diagnose Crashes

Aug 11, 2025

If your Windows PC crashes unexpectedly, slows down, or behaves oddly, one of the most powerful diagnostic tools at your disposal is Windows Reliability Monitor. Windows Reliability Monitor is a built-in tool that gives you a timeline of system events, application failures, and Windows errors. It is one of the easiest ways to diagnose system instability, crashes, or freezes.

In this article, we will show you how to access and use Reliability Monitor to diagnose crashes and improve system performance.

Steps to diagnose crashes via Reliability Monitor

Step 1. Open Reliability Monitor

Press Windows + S and search for Reliability Monitor or View reliability history. Click on the result to open it.

Another way to access Reliability Monitor is through the Control Panel:

Control Panel > System and Security > Security and Maintenance > Maintenance > View reliability history

Step 2. Read the Reliability Graph

When the tool opens, you will see:

  • Scale (1–10): A score from 1 (least stable) to 10 (most stable) over a daily timeline.
  • Red X: Critical error (e.g., crash, BSOD)
  • Yellow Warning (!): Application or driver failure
  • Blue Info (i): Updates, successful installs, etc.
  • Event details: Click on a day to view detailed logs such as Application Crash, Windows Failure, or Update Installed for that specific date.

Step 3. Use Reliability Monitor to Diagnose Problems

Click each event for technical details, like faulty application or error code.

Focus on the days your PC crashed or behaved unusually, and look for patterns of frequent red Xs or crashes. These indicate system or application failures.

Look for patterns, e.g., repeated crashes by the same app, process or driver, and remove or reinstall these faulty ones.

Optional tips

  • Click Save reliability history at the lower left corner to export a report as an XML file for deeper analysis or tech support.

Conclusion

Reliability Monitor is a powerful yet overlooked tools in Windows. Combine it with other tools like Event Viewer and Device Manager to troubleshoot blue screens, driver conflicts, or app crashes with ease.
