On Windows 11, the modern Snipping Tool can automatically save screenshots to your Pictures > Screenshots folder when you capture them. For many people, this is convenient, but if you only need temporary snips (for pasting into documents, chats, or image editors), the auto‑save behavior can quickly clutter your drive.
Snipping Tool has its own suite of settings that determine how it saves screenshots, so you can access them to make changes.
1. Press Win + S to open the Search bar, type Snipping Tool to open.
2. In the upper-right corner of Snipping Tool, click the three dots and then click Settings to open the Snipping Tool’s settings page.

3. Find and turn off the Automatically save screenshots option to stop Windows 11 from automatically saving Snipping Tool screenshots.

That’s it! This will prevent auto-save on Snipping Tool for unaltered screenshots, copying them only to the clipboard instead of the hard drive.
By default, the tool deposits every screenshot into your PicturesScreenshots folder, naming each file “Screenshot-YYYY-MM-DD.” This timestamped format makes it easy to track down a particular image. After you disable Snipping Tool’s auto-save feature, you can manually delete the screenshots you don’t need.

Once you’ve turned off auto-save in Snipping Tool, don’t forget to clear out any old screenshots you no longer need to free up disk space and keep your Pictures folder clutter-free. This minor adjustment can streamline your workflow, save storage space, and ensure that you retain only those screenshots that are truly important.
