How to Enable Find My Device on Windows 11

Mar 13, 2026

The Find My Device feature uses your Microsoft account to sync data to the cloud: when enabled, Windows 11 periodically sends the device’s approximate location to Microsoft. If the device is ever lost or stolen, you can sign in to your Microsoft account online to view the last recorded location and help recover it. This how-to guide walks you through enabling, using, and disabling Find My Device in Windows 11.

Enable Find My Device

1. Press Win + I to open Settings. Go to Privacy & security.

2. Under App permissions, select Location and make sure Location services is turned on.

  Turn on Location services.

3. Return to Privacy & security and click the Find my device entry. Then switch the toggle to On

Turn on the Find my device toggle.

If prompted, sign in with your Microsoft account to link the device to your account.

After you enable it, Windows will periodically save the device’s approximate location to your Microsoft account so you can view it later. If you want to disable this feature, turn the Find my device toggle off.

Locate Lost Device from Your Microsoft Account

1. Go to account.microsoft.com/devices on a web browser and sign in with the same Microsoft account used on the lost device.

2. Select the device, then click Find my device to view its last known location.

Click Find my device to view its last known location.

Please note that this feature will only work if the computer is connected to the network.

If you want to stop the device from showing in your Microsoft account entirely, remove it from your account:

1. Sign in to account.microsoft.com/devices again.

2. Find the device in the list, click it, and choose Remove device. Removing the device will disconnect it from your Microsoft account and stop saving location information in the future.

Troubleshooting

If nothing has shown up, or the location is inaccurate, please check these:
  • Confirm the device is signed into the same Microsoft account shown on the website.
  • Ensure Location services feature is enabled on the device (Settings > Privacy & security> Location).
  • Ensure the device has internet access and is turned on.
  • Windows will only save location periodically; if the device is offline, it may show the last time it uploaded location.

Conclusion

Find My Device is a simple, built-in way to save and view a Windows 11 device’s last-known location through your Microsoft account. Enable it in Settings (and turn on Location services) to help recover lost devices; disable it in Settings or remove the device from your Microsoft account if you no longer want the feature active.
