How to Set Charging Limits on iOS 18

May 28, 2025

Apple has been making considerable efforts to help iPhone users prevent premature battery wear, which has plagued the iPhone for years.

Lithium-ion batteries can suffer from overcharging, which can produce metallic lithium inside the cell, posing a fire hazard. From iOS 13 on, one of the main ways that Apple has addressed this is with overcharging prevention. Limiting the charge to 80% significantly reduces the risk of battery damage through overcharging.

Now, with the launch of iOS 18, Apple allows the user to take a more hands-on approach to minimizing battery wear by introducing a new set of charging options, including 80%, 85%, 90%, 95%, and 100%.

Why Set Charging Limits?

Charging your device to 100% and leaving it plugged in, especially overnight, can gradually reduce battery capacity. Limiting the maximum charge (for example, capping it at 80% or 90%) slows down the aging process and helps maintain long-term battery performance. For users planning to keep their iPhones for several years, this feature is a game-changer.

How to Set Charging Limits in iOS 18

Apple has made it simple to control your charging limits. Follow these steps:

1. Launch the Settings app on your iPhone.

2. Scroll down and select Battery.

3. In the Battery section, tap on Charging.

In the Battery section, tap on Charging.

4. Look for the Charging Limit or Maximum Charge Limit option. Tap it, then use the slider or preset buttons (e.g., 80%, 90%, 100%) to choose your desired maximum charge level.

Choose your desired maximum charge level from Charging Limit area.

Optimized Battery Charging (Optional)

You may notice another feature, Optimized Battery Charging, beneath the Charge Limit area, which is available when Charge Limit is set to 100 percent. When the feature is enabled, your iPhone will delay charging past 80 percent in certain situations.

When Optimized Battery Charging is active, a notification on the Lock Screen says when your iPhone will be fully charged. If you need to have your iPhone fully charged sooner, touch and hold the notification and then tap Charge Now.

Tips

1. Once you’ve set a charging limit, your iPhone will automatically pause charging once it reaches the set percentage (for instance, 80%). If you later need a full charge (before a long trip, for example), you can return to the settings and select 100% or temporarily disable the limit.

2. If you notice your charging limit feature isn’t available, ensure your device is updated to iOS 18 and is compatible (some older iPhones may not support this feature).

3. You can disable or adjust the limit at any time for flexibility when you need a full battery.

Conclusion

With iOS 18, Apple allows users to take charge of battery care like never before. Using the new charging limits feature, you can set your maximum charge percentage, extending your battery life. Take a few moments to set it up—and enjoy peace of mind every time you plug in your iPhone.
